Cycling Dudes: Ride from Lakefield to Young’s Pt thru Douro Twp

30 cyclists met in the Lakefield municipal parking lot beside the arena on a pleasant summer day. Conrad Hill led 6 cyclists on a route thru & around Lakefield followed by lunch at The thirsty Loon. Pete MacLoghlin led 23 cyclists on a 40 km ride to Young’s Pt. From the parking lot we rode up Strickland St a long gradual climb before a downhill run across Hgw 28 to Lynch’s Rock Rd & east then south to Cedar Cross Rd. East on Cedar Cross to the T-intersection at Payne Line Rd taking a short jog north to Oke Rd & east to Cty Rd 4. the roads from Lynch’s Rock Rd to Cty Rd 4 are gravel surfaced. Continued north On Cty Rd 4 up a hill past Warsaw caves to Bethel Chuch at the intersection of Cty Rd 6. Cycled west on Cty Rd 6 to Camp Line Rd & north to Birchview Rd. Then west on Birchview beside Clear Lk to Hgw 28 & north to the Old Bridge Inn in Young’s Pt for lunch on the patio. After lunch cycled south on Hgw 28 to the Douro 4th line & south to Cty Rd 6 then west across Hgw 28 & into Lakefield. Another option is turn east from Cty Rd 6 onto the Douro 5th Line which takes you back to Strickland St. While it is not a demanding route it does have a few “rollers” which you can expect on almost any countryside route in Peterborough Cty! We had 2 unfortunate incidents today. The 1st was a flat rear tire on Oke Rd which took a bit of time to repair but the 2nd more serious one was that Dan Volman collapsed while waiting for the flat tire group to catch up at Bethel Church. An ambulance was called & as the flat tire group approached we were startled to see the flashing red lights. Dan was taken to PRHC for observation & tests, the diagnosis was syncope (fainting) due to dehydration & fatigue. Thankfully he is home & has fully recovered. After the ride Peter Hamley, Burton McClelland & Mike Wood drove Dan’s truck to pick up his bike before driving it back to Dan’s home near Cavan.
