We had 15 Dudes turn out to blaze this new route. From Keith’s home we cycled east thru a private lane to the Asphodel 8th Line which took us south to Victoria St &into Hastings. Unfortunately Mike Evans was left behind at the start but Maureen Buchanan drove him into Hastings to reconnect with the group. We then cycled to Campbellford on the TCT. The trail is on the railway bed which has not been upgraded so is rough as the photos show. The trail had been blocked with gates & fencing by a farmer but they were removed this year when cattle gates were installed allowing us to do this ride. However on the plus side it is wide, has been brush cut & sturdy bridges have been constructed. We arrived for lunch at Rubb’s around 12:30 & didn’t leave until 2:00 as the food order seemed to take forever! By the time we arrived back in Hastings we were down to 7 cyclists! Our thanks to Maureen & Jim Pare for coming to rescue of cyclists that had succumbed to the heat. After this ride we need to consider some guidelines for hot summer days because we have had several episodes of people suffering from the effects of heat exhaustion over the past few weeks. This ride was too long, 60 km, for a hot summer day. For future rides on warm summer days I am going to suggest that we cancel the ride if the forecast indicates temperatures over 30 C, limit the ride to 35 km on hot days & start the ride at 9:00. Photos are thanks to Jim Pare
